WASHINGTON – The global sea level is rising faster than was originally calculated.
According to a leaked report from the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP), sea levels will rise from 2.7 to 4.8 feet by the year 2100.
The rapport indicates that oceans will rise three times higher than what the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had published in 2007.
The IPCC, an United Nations organization that studies the risks and effects of climate change, had estimated that sea levels would only rise from 9.5 to 29.5 inches. The organization did not take in consideration the fast melting of icebergs in the North Pole and Greenland.
Fast rising seawaters could have a devastating impact on the world. Countries that lay equal to or below sea level could disappear into the oceans. Already there is evidence of areas being taken over by oceans.

This cemetery on the Majuro Atoll, part of the Marshall Islands, is among the areas being overtaken by rising seas.
At present 150 million people live in areas that are only 3 feet above sea level. Any rise of sea water would certainly spark the beginning of mass population relocation for those regions, which would create problems of over-population for other areas.
Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for climate, says ‘This rapport is yet another reminder of so many already, that it’s time we roll up our sleeves and do something to stop climate change.”
