CEBU – Each year during Holy Week, the week proceeding Easter, a small town in the Philippines performs real-life crucifixions to honor Jesus Christ.
In the town of San Pedro Cutud, each year, beginning on Good Friday before 3 PM, deeply devout Catholics perform the passage of the crucifixion as it is written in the Bible.
These crucifixions however aren’t re-enactments of a gruesome event that happened over 2000 years ago. The people or Cutud are what scholars refer to as ‘orthodox Catholics’. Their belief in the Lord Christ is so unshakably strong, they sacrifice themselves on the cross just like Jesus did.
Real nails are hammered into the palms of their hands and feet. But before being nailed to the cross, these believers beat themselves with wooden-spike whips until they are a bloody mess and their skin is literally shredded to bits.
Thousands of people from around the world gather to the place located about 86 miles north of Manila each year to witness the real-life crucifixions. For those who attend what many consider to be horrifying scenes, enlightenment is their ultimate quest.
The festivities climax with the ‘resurrection’ of those crucified on Easter Sunday. Many who attend the shocking ceremony contest that witnessing the crucifixions touched them profoundly.
For some, the event is so dramatic they claim to experience a totally new re-birth of themselves and state their entire being is filled with an inner peace unlike anything they ever realized before.
These souls are convinced that watching the crucifixion take place and sharing the strong religious devotion with so many made a life-altering impression on them they will never forget.
