NEW YORK – Irene hit New Jersey shoreline for a second time with winds up to 75 miles per hour.
Scroll Down For Video:
The hurricane had already been downgraded to a tropical storm before unleashing buckets of rain.
For New York, the worst has passed, according to an emergency service saying: “A few districts are empty but overall we survived it!”.
Life-threatening waves are still expected later as when high tide rolls in but that’s about the extend of what the East Coast can still anticipate from storm Irene.
5 million people are without electricity and 11 people have died, mostly from being hit by flying debris, uprooted trees and falling branches.
As a tropical storm, Irene has the power to produce winds up to 73 miles per hour. People have been advised by the Hurricane center to aware of isolated tornadoes.
Heavy rainfall is expected for the next several hours. The water level at New York’s port has already risen by 3.6 feet and the Hudson and East river are running over their borders.
Despite all the excess water, damage is relatively minor as is wind damage.
One CNN top man declared that the real damage in New York must still be evaluated as much of its electricity and other infrastructures are located underground.
New Jersey’s governor Chris Christie, has announced the state is struggling with flooding and urged his citizens to stay home.
“People want to get out of their homes and we receive phone calls of people driving away in their vehicles. Don’t leave your homes. It is still not safe. There is major flooding and in some areas sudden flooding is possible.”
