ANKARA – Hundreds are feared dead beneath the ruble of destroyed buildings during the 7.3 earthquake that struck Ankara, Turkey on Sunday.

500 to 1000 people may have lost their lives during the quake that almost destroyed everything in sight.
In the city of Ercis fifty people have died, hundreds have been reportedly injured and 80 buildings, including a dormitory, have collapsed. In the city of Van, at least 10 buildings were flattened to the ground, according to vice-president Besir Atalay.
Reports are coming in stating that several other cities in the mountainous region have also been destroyed by the massive
quake, according to the Turkish Geological Institute Kandilli.
The quake struck about 3:41 AM PST. The epicenter was in the town of Tabanli near the Iranian border. The quake had a depth of about 3.12 miles below surface.
An aftershock of 5.6 magnitude was registered only 15 minutes after the first quake struck, causing further damages to a region where the houses are build mostly from sand stone.
The country of Turkey lies on an earthquake fault and is prone to quakes. In 1976 4,000 people died from a massive earthquake.
In 1999, 17,000 people died in the city of Izmit, during a 7.6 quake.
