KANDAHAR – More than 400 prisoners escaped from an Afghan jail, many of them were Taliban insurgents.
A tunnel stretching over 600 feet from inside the Sarposa prison to a location outside the compound served as the escape route for 476 prisoners.
Amazingly, the tunnel was dug from outside breaking through the cement floor in a jail cell, freeing the detainees.
Kandahar officials said that a surge team has already been activated and 15 political prisoners have already been re-captured.
One of those prisoners said that it took him 30 minutes to walk the length of the tunnel. He said at the end of the tunnel vehicles were waiting to take the escapees away. The escape operation lasted the entire night.

The hole inside a jail cell that allowed 476 prisoners to escape. How they managed to break through the concrete without the guards hearing anything isn't clear.
This isn’t the first time prisoners escape from Sarposa Prison.
In 2008 a suicide bomber blew up the prison gates and a major check point, giving prisoners the freedom to walk out. Nearly 900 of them escaped then with many of them being insurgents.
Since then, millions have been spent to upgrading the prison, making it more secure. Last night’s escape of a large group of prisoners indicate however that the prison is still not secure enough.
Escape of the prisoners could seriously threaten the region since the Taliban will no doubt actively pursue to recruit most of the escaped insurgents once again.
