NYC – For the first time in the city’s history, New Yorkers have been mandated by their mayor to vacate the city before hurricane Irene hits the east coast.

Tens of thousands of Americans are fleeing the East Coast as one of the country’s leading experts warned that Hurricane Irene would cause a ‘nightmare scenario’ when it makes landfall tomorrow in New York.

The storm has already injured eight people in Florida, center, as stormy waters from Irene hit people on a pier.

In North Carolina heavy rainfall, high waves and strong winds hit the shoreline and threatened several luxurious coastal homes.

Many residents have begun stocking up on supplies in New York amidst the first signs of panic buying., left, while cars streamed away from the coast in Virginia.

Panic stricken, east coasters buy up everything in sight.

Authorities in New York today ordered an unprecedented evacuation of low-lying areas as the city prepared to shut down ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Irene.

The entire subway, bus and MTA train network will be shut down from midday Saturday and people living in a number of areas of the city have until 5pm tomorrow to leave their homes.


“We’ve never done a mandatory evacuation before in any part of this city. The sun is shining but don’t be misled – there’s a very dangerous storm headed in our direction.”

President Barack Obama cut short his vacation in Martha’s Vineyard and warned the U.S. is about to experience ‘a historic hurricane’.

Around 65million people are in the path of the storm which has weakened slightly overnight to a Category 2 with 110mph winds – but experts warn it could re-strengthen and the storm is expected to be near the threshold between a Category 2 and 3 storm when it finally reaches the U.S. tomorrow.

Despite being downgraded to a Category 2 storm leading experts warn the storm could still be dangerous and could cause billions of dollar’s worth of destruction.

New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Delaware have declared states of emergency.
