NEW YORK – Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a top French government official, was accused of attacking a maid at the Sofitel Hotel in New York just two days ago.

The diplomat allegedly tried getting out of the U.S. in a hurry, leaving his personal belongings behind in his hotel room.   New York detectives managed to arrest DSK who had already boarded a plane and was awaiting take off.

Authorities placed Strauss-Kahn under arrest at the New York police station.  During an unprecedented move by a Federal judge, the French man was denied a $1 million bail bond his lawyers had requested stating that Dominique Strauss-Kahn is a high flight risk.

Kahn is set to reappear before the judge on May 20th.  Until then, he is sure to spend his time behind bars.

The arrest of one of France’s top officials struck its citizens like a bomb.  Newspapers were filled with the latest story about Kahn who was said to be a presidential candidate to replace the countries current president Sarkozy.

Kahn has stated he is innocent.  If convicted the top elect could get 74 years in jail.

But Kahn’s arrest has other implications as well that are further reaching than just the alleged attack.   The French man is the main financial coordinator for the European Nations.

When arrested, Kahn was said to be flying out to Germany to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel and had another meeting scheduled on Monday to talk about possibly financially supporting Greece which despite its earlier bail out by Germany is still in tremendous financial hardship.

Already the European stock market had a much lower trade on Monday because of the uncertainties that await Greece since DSK will not be holding any financial assistance meetings any time soon.

For the French Social Party, Kahn’s sex scandal is a major slap in the face.  He was said to be the party’s hopeful to take over the presidency of Sarkozy in 2012.

The French diplomat is being charge with 7 counts of violating the U.S. laws.  Sexual assault, attempted rape and locking up the maid against her will are part of those charges.

Kahn’s lawyer, Brafman, said he was disappointed with the court’s decision to deny his client bail but said the top French official had a strong defense and will most likely be a free man soon.
