BANGKOK – The E-Coli virus that has created a state of panic in Western Europe and has spread to Canada and the United States has now been found in Thailand.
Vegetables imported from Europe are said to be contaminated with the EHEC bacteria, that has killed 33 people in Europe and hospitalized thousands more since it was first discovered there last month.
Thai authorities announced they found the E-Coli on European imported Cauliflower.
Thai scientists are examining the E-Coli strain to see if it is the same deadly bacteria that has spread throughout 9 European countries, Canada and the U.S..
Thailand has asked Germany to forward a batch of bean sprouts they had first considered to be the cause of the contamination but later turned out to be a false alarm.
“We will still need another five days before we are sure what E-Coli strain we are dealing with,” Thai authority announced.
On Thursday, an E-Coli variant was found on European imported avocados. Experts have since been able to determine that that strain however isn’t the deadly EHEC bacteria.
The discovery of E-Coli on vegetables in Thailand raises major concerns. The country is known for its many vegetable stands and its floating market that sells a large variety of fresh ‘ready-to-eat’ vegetables from small boats which attracts thousands of people; one infection could easily result in an epidemic.

Thailand's floating vegetable market just outside Bangkok is a major tourist attraction. One undetected E-Coli virus could spread quickly and have devastating consequences.
As of yet Thai authorities have not reported anyone contracting the virus. They are hopeful they will be able to contain the outbreak of the E-Coli infection quickly.
