CHRISTCHURCH – Just barely over a hard hitting quake in February 2011 that left most citizens still shaking and devastated a great portion of the city, Christchurch is yet rocked once again by not one but two tremblers.
Once more earthquakes rattled through the city of Christchurch in New Zealand. The American seismology institute (USGS) stated that 2 quakes hit the City; first there was a 6.0 quake followed by a 5.5 shaker.
The epicenter of the quake was about 8 miles from the center of the city. Buildings that were damaged by February’s quake got hit again. The damage to property is extensive.
At least 50 buildings have collapsed, large portions of the city are without water and power and a few dozen people have been injured.
Still shaken from February’s 2011 quake, citizens ran into the streets in panic. That quake killed at least 180 people and destroyed over 100,000 homes.
Today, two people were able to pull themselves out from under the ruins of a damaged church. Shopping centers, offices and airports have been evacuated throughout Christchurch.
The two larger quakes were followed by four smaller ones. Seismetologist state that Monday’s quakes are still aftershocks from the February 2011 quake.
Thus far, Christchurch has experienced a dozen aftershocks since the 6.3 quake earlier this year.
The city of Christchurch in New Zealand has had its share of major earthquakes lately.
In September 2010, the city was also struck by a 7.2 quake.
Today’s quake makes this the third major earthquake to strike New Zealand second largest city over a period of only 10 months.
