Dead dolphins continue to wash ashore at the Gulf Of Mexico one year after the massive oil spill.

For the past 14 months, more than 400 dead dolphins have been found by the shorelines around the Gulf of Mexico or found floating in the water.

Scientists believe but aren’t entirely sure that the massive death rate is an aftereffect of the enormous oil spill that happened there one year ago and went down in history as one of the worst human made disasters in the world.

April 20th 2011 marks the first anniversary of the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon that resulted in spewing some 5 billion barrels of crude British Petroleum oil into the Gulf of Mexico, devastating its environment, marine life, wild life and bringing enormous financial hardship to people who depend on the Gulf of Mexico as their primary source of income.

Thus far 406 dead dolphins have been found.  ”The number is unusually high,” says National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Especially young dolphins are dying in alarming numbers.  The NOAA still doesn’t have a concrete explanation why the phenomenon is taking place.

Many point the finger to the oil contamination that happened one year ago while others believe the incidents are not related.  Dead dolphins have been washing ashore along the Gulf’s coastline since February 2010, although NOAA does admit, that numbers of dead ocean life have increased dramatically since the spill.

Moby Solangi, director of the Institute of Marine Mammal Studies, complains that because of the ongoing legal investigation into the oil spill, examining or even viewing the dead carcasses is not possible.

Biologists appointed to examine the dead dolphins have been ordered by the U.S. government not to reveal their findings until a court process against BP has begun.

Of the 406 dead dolphins that have been found, 15 of them were covered in oil of which 6  of those  were covered in BP oil.

In addition to the young dolphins, turtles and other sea animals have also been found dead in larger quantities than  normal.
