Boston Crime Boss Arrested

BOSTON – After more than 16 years on the run, Boston crime boss, James ‘Whitey’ Bulger and his girlfriend have been arrested by FBI.

The notorious gangster was on the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted list for his alleged involvement with 19 murders.

The fugitive had been able to elude authorities for 16 years.

On Wednesday his running came to an end when Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested him, along with his girlfriend Catherine Greig, at his hideout in Los Angeles.

Richard Deslauriers, special agent in charge of the FBI’s office in Boston, and Steven Martinez, FBI assistant director in charge in Los Angeles, told NBC News that recent publicity produced a tip that led agents to the 1000 block of Third Street in Santa Monica, CA, where they located both Bulger and Greig at a residence.

Bulger, now 81, was leader of the Winter Hill gang and was a top FBI informant.

He was able to escape in January 1995 after being tipped off by a former Boston FBI agent that he would be arrested.

That set off one of the most hunted fugitives investigation in the United States, that lasted 16 years.

Bulger faces a series of federal charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics distribution, extortion and money laundering. Greig is charged with harboring a fugitive.
