ISLAMABAD – Osama Bin Laden’s death has stirred up controversy and worries of increased al-Qaeda attacks.

But no one could have foreseen that the man’s mansion would become a local tourist attraction in Abbottabad, where the al-Qaeda leader was killed.

Hundreds flocked to Bin Laden’s compound taking pictures of themselves standing in front of the massive entrance doors.  Others are glaring over the walls hoping to catch a glimpse of the inside of the mansion.

Men, women and children are all around the property that once belonged to Osama Bin Laden.  The compound has been locked up and no one is allowed to enter.  That doesn’t stop hundreds upon hundreds of Pakistani armed with cameras and cellphones, snapping photos of the now infamous number one terrorist hide out.

Ali Abbas, a local resident of Abbottabad, had already begun a campaign to turn the al-Qaeda leader’s home into a tourist attraction and says he welcomes the interest.  Abbas says he is sure more people will come to visit the place of Bin Laden from places like Europe and even America.

“Westerners are crazy.  Even if locals show up or not, foreigners will definitely come if the place is declared a tourist site.  It will be very good for our city.  People should come and see where the world’s biggest terrorist lived,” says Abbas.

Abbas also believes that Bin Laden’s place should not be touched and left as is to give it historic value.  ”Media should be allowed in to take pictures from the inside,” says Abbas.

“Once the security situation gets better, people will come to see this place.  But it must first be declared a tourist place,” Abbas added.

Pakistani authorities have not expressed a similar interest or even a possibility of turning Bin Laden’s compound into a top tourist attraction.

Fear remains high al-Qaeda, the terrorist group originally founded by Osama Bin Laden, may turn the tourist attraction into a possible shrine for terrorist.

For now, only locals and a few Pakistanis willing and able to travel a bit are getting the ‘free’ tour, including souvenir photos of the what was once the hide-out of the world’s most wanted man.
