June 6th 2011 marks the 30th anniversary of the first documented AIDS cases.
In the fight against the epidemic AIDS cases have dropped substantially despite several continents still being severely afflicted by the deadly disease.
Poverty stricken countries and nations with below average income are still experiencing the highest concentration of AIDS patients. Primarily this is due to lack of education and lack of medical assistance.
According to the report ‘Nations at the crossroads’ that the United Nations released in remembrance of ‘AIDS at 30′ some 6.6 million people in poor countries received AIDS blockers.
Although that sounds like a lot, the report points out that some 9 million additional AIDS patients in those same regions did not get any medication or treatment.
The good news however is that more and more people are being given access tot HIV/AIDS medication and treatments and world wide AIDS cases have dropped by 25 percent the last decade [2001 - 2009].
Asha-Rose Migiro, secretary-general of the UN said however that “despite the brighter outlook, we still have a long way to go”.
The United States has scheduled a global meeting next week to determine the next affirmative actions and directions that must be taken to eradicate AIDS from the world.
UNAIDS, the world’s AIDS program, wants to bring the total AIDS cases around the globe to none. Migiro expressed that hopefully the global AIDS meeting lead by the United States next week will be bold enough to layout a new daring plan that will accomplish this goal.
FACTS ABOUT AIDS
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is now a pandemic.
As of 2009, AVERT estimated that there are 33.3 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS, with 2.6 million new HIV infections per year and 1.8 million annual deaths due to AIDS.
In 2007, UNAIDS estimated: 33.2 million people worldwide had AIDS that year; AIDS killed 2.1 million people in the course of that year, including 330,000 children, and 76% of those deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa.
According to UNAIDS 2009 report, worldwide some 60 million people have been infected, with some 25 million deaths, and 14 million orphaned children in southern Africa alone since the epidemic began.
In solidarity for ‘AIDS at 30′ people around the world are wearing the ‘AIDS button’. Several informative AIDS programs around the globe in schools, libraries and on TV are putting out AIDS awareness information.
In parts of the world ‘AIDS at 30′ is celebrated with parades and the presentation of large quilts containing the names of those who have died of the disease.
