NEW YORK – Hurricane Irene is expected to reach the East Coast this weekend.
In North Carolina, residents are told to get ready to evacuate as weather experts predict the Category 4 storm will be very destructive with very strong winds and mass flooding.
Signs of the power of Irene have been visible in the Bahamas after the storm changed paths, direction USA.
90 percent of the homes in the Bahamas have been flattened to the ground. Dirt landscapes have been turned into mud pools.
The few homes that didn’t get destroyed were flooded by several feet of muddy water, forcing residents to evacuate, leaving most of their belongings behind.

In the Dominican Republic 3 people died as a result of Irene’s wrath and according to local paper El Nuevo Diario, many more are missing. 38,000 people had to be evacuated. 90 towns have been completely shut off from access to the outside world and 2,000 homes were flooded.
As the Category 4 hurricane makes its way to the United States, the National Hurricane Center said to expect winds of up to 156 miles per hour. Because the storm moves over water, experts believe it will not diminish in strength but are hopeful it will not turn into a Category 5 hurricane, the highest level given to a storm.
In North Carolina, evacuation of some 150,000 tourists has began in anticipation of the storm which is reported to touch land over the weekend.
Residents have been warned to expect high tides, strong winds, power outages and even flash flooding.
Severe damage to buildings, especially ripped off roofs is also expected to occur.
