NEW YORK – Fashions come and go. This latest form of fashionable expression may just hit main-street forever.

Body art; a personal preference of decorating one’s body with tattoos or piercings or both is combining the art of style and old-fashion elegance with a modern appeal.

Body corsage, the latest body design fashion to hit the street.   A set of rings pierced in the lower back, tied together with a string give the appearance of an old fashion, mid-eval corsage.

Body corsage is the newest 'beach wear' fashion trend

The style, some consider to be trendy and hip doesn’t come cheap and could be harmful.

Cosmetic surgeons warn however that such body art could cause a variety of health risks.  Scars and infections from the metal rings inserted in the skin are just two issues to be concerned with.

Because corsage piercings aren’t limited to just the back, popular body places are the back, ribs and the neck, insertion of multiple rings is very painful and will leave highly visible unsightly scars after the rings grow out of the skin.

Plastic surgeon Kevin Hancock is stunned that people want this and warns that “each ring will result in scar tissue.  Every person reacts differently to the insertion of the rings.  For some individuals, the scars will only be a small red dot, for other, the tissue could turn into full grown keloids.”

“What’s more,” says the doctor, “You could snag yourself in one or more of those rings, tearing your flesh.”

The corsage doesn’t come cheap either.  At about $8 per ring, depending on the size of the corsage desired, the body art can easily cost $100 and upwards and takes about one full hour to complete.

Laura Hunt, a British tattoo artist who came up with the corsage piercing says that inserting the rings is painful and one must take great care to keep the flesh wounds clean to avoid infection.

She adds that “the rings will grow out after about 3 to 4 weeks leaving behind tiny scars.”  Yet Hunt says that corsage piercing is growing quickly in popularity as people are looking more and more for expressions of individuality.
