Hollande managed to get a 51.9 percent of the votes, making him France’s newest leader.

Nicolas Sarkozy has already admitted to losing the election and has congratulated his opponent via telephone.

Sarkozy who was France’s President for five years, announced on Wednesday that he would retire from the political arena if he lost the presidency.

That Hollande took over the candidacy as France’s newest president doesn’t come as a surprise. Already preliminary surveys had concluded the socialist would walk away the winner.

Hollande’s ex wife Ségolène Royal, said during a TV interview that she was ‘very happy’ he won.

“France can trust him,” she declared.

Francois Hollandse is only the second socialist President elected in France. François Mitterand was the first one. He ruled from 1981 to 1995.
