BEIJING – An attempted hijacking of a Chinese flight ends with two kidnappers being beaten to death by on board passengers.

The incident took place on Friday when six men tried to kidnap a plane on route from Hotan to Ürümqi but were overpowered by angry passengers and cabin personnel.
The passengers were so aggressive with their defense that two of the hijackers later died at a hospital from the injuries they sustained during the on board brawl.
The hijackers, between 20 and 38 years old, began their hijacking plot only minutes after the plane had taken off. Using aluminum crutches, they threatened scared passengers while trying to reach the plane’s cockpit.
The hijackers were unaware there were six police officers on board and together with a few brave passengers they overpowered the kidnappers, who carried explosives with them. 10 of the 101 people on board were injured during the brawl.
Once news of the hijacking spread, security was immediately increased at several airports around China and on all major flights to Xinjiang. The past several years, this region has become a confrontational stage between Han Chinese and Uyghurs.

The Muslim Uyghurs claim that their culture and religion are being threatened by the Han. Three years ago, 200 people were killed during an unrest between the Han and the Uyghurs in the city of Ürümqi.
