AUCKLAND – New Zealanders turned from being shocked to being outraged after finding a newborn baby locked in a car with a note attached to its chest.

“My mum’s in doing the shopping,” the note read.

According to the ‘New Zealand Herald’ the incident occurred on Saturday at the parking lot of the ‘Pak ‘n Save’ supermarket in Porirua.

The note also had a cellphone number listed and urged people to call that number if there was a problem.

A man who spotted the baby and the note after he parked his vehicle next to the lady’s car, told the Herald:

“It was written from the baby’s perspective, and it said, ‘My mum’s in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything’, and it had the cellphone number.

“We waited there for a little bit, wondering if the mum was just going to be two seconds and come back. And my wife said, ‘I’m not going in without someone being here with the baby’,” the man told the Herald.

A picture of the baby with the note was posted on New Zealand’s radio personality Polly Gillespie’s Facebook page. It triggered heated responses.

More than 1100 comments were posted, most of them called the mother irresponsible. Some comments showed sympathy with the baby’s mum however.

“It’s very easy to come on here and cast judgement on others, because I’m sure you’ve never, ever done anything wrong in your lives,” one person responded.

Pak ‘n Save compliance manager Marty Fryer said he didn’t know what had happened until somebody rang him about it yesterday.

In New Zealand it is illegal for a parent or guardian to leave a child under the age of 14 alone for an unreasonable time or in unreasonable conditions. Doing so could result in a fine of up to $US2,500.
