LOS ANGELES – The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California has developed a technology that allows circuit boards to repair itself.

The system consists of sensors that send information about heat, voltage and usage to a ‘central brain’ called ASIC, which is capable of repairing the components.
Stephen Bowers, who works at the High-Speed Integrated Circuits lab at the Engineering and Applied Science Department of Caltech says:
“We have designed the system as generic as possible, so that it can determine the optimal orientation of all actuators by itself, without external intervention.”
The Caltech researchers already demonstrated their new technology using tiny high-frequency signal amplifiers, with the ‘immune system’.
In the experiments the chips were damaged in different ways, using a powerful laser among other destructive methods.
Although more than half of the amplifier and a large number of components were destroyed by the laser, the chip was able to recover in less than a second.
