Holmes (25) is the prime suspect in the Aurora theater shooting that left 12 people dead and injured 70 others in July last year.
If found guilty, James Holmes could spend the rest of his life behind bars. He may opt however to claim not guilty by reason of insanity.
Public prosecutors say that Holmes carefully planned his attack. They accuse him of murder and attempted murder and are seeking the death penalty.
