Russia’s national TV reported on Tuesday that a group of former Soviet-Union veterans who were stationed in Afghanistan went searching for him.
The veterans found Bachretdin Chakimov, who served a mandatory 20 years as a USSR soldier, living as a poor man in the Afghan province of Herat and going by the name ‘Sheikh Abdulla’.
Bachretdin Chakimov, who originates from Uzbek, got severely wounded 33 years ago while fighting in the district of Shindand. Locals took care of the injured soldiers and nurtured him back to health.
After being completely healed, Chakimov simply stayed with the town’s people, who accepted him as one of their own.
Chakimov’s old war buddies had been tracing their friend for over one year before finding him.
The group of veterans formed a special search committee that looks for soldiers who went missing during the Afgan war (1979-1989). Since 1993 the committee has found 29 former USSR soldiers still alive.
Seven of the men the group of veterans have found have since returned to Russia, the former Soviet Union.
Bachretdin Chakimov, who is a widower and without children, says he wants to be number eight; he would love to see his real family again.
