STOCKHOLM – Furniture giant Ikea, has halted sales of its almond tarts in 22 countries after bacteria were found in the pies in China.

Coliform bacteria, which comes from human and animal feces, were found in a shipment of the Ikea’s almond tarts in China in November last year.
The Chinese government ordered all Ikea bake-ware to be be destroyed.
However, breakdown in international communications between China and Ikea are blamed for the furniture company only finding out on Monday that their almonds tarts were tainted with the coliform bacteria.
A spokesperson for the company said that sales of the item were stopped immediately in 22 countries, including China, when the company found out about the contamination but added that there was never any immediate danger to the consumers.
The pies are delivered by Almondy, a Swedish delivery company for Ikea. Ikea said it will conduct its own thorough tests of the tarts to determine what caused the bacterial contamination.
The tests will also be conducted on the remaining stock of almond tarts still at the company to obtain a clear cut picture of where the tarts may have become contaminated.
Ikea has been plagued with food distribution difficulties. Just last week the company pulled all meatball packages from its shelves after it was determined that they were mixed with horse meat, which is illegal.
Yet Ikea continues to expand in various types of business, other than making furniture. Just today, the company announced it has struck a deal with the Marriott Hotel chain to build ‘cheap’ hotels.
The first such hotel will be build in Milan, Italy next year and will be named ‘Moxy’. Ikea says it plans to have 150 such hotels in operation within the next five to ten years.
