The fake Cardinal by the name of Ralph Napierski hails from Australia and was ‘caught’ when other Cardinals noticed his cloak and chain cross were ‘abnormal’.
The cloak Napierski was wearing was too short and the cross on his chest was hanging from an unusual chain. Instead of wearing the standard purple sash, Napierski had on a purple scarf.
Nonetheless, the Aussie managed to get into the conclave and mingle with other Cardinals who came from around the world and are getting ready to find a replacement for Benedict XVI who stepped down on February 28th.
When the fraudulent Cardinal was finally uncovered, he was escorted outside much to the delight of attending journalists.
Today marked the first day of the general Cardinal congregation. 12 of the 115 Cardinals given voting rights to elect a new Pope have not yet arrived at the Vatican.
Reportedly the College of Cardinals has elected to write Benedict XVI a letter to thank him for his service and show him their affection.
It was Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Deacon of the College who came up with the idea of the letter.
As of yet a start date for the Conclave has not been announced.
Exactly how Ralph Napierski managed to get inside the Vatican is yet unknown and still under investigation.
