The former wife of John Edwards, who was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 and 2008, has refused to continue her cancer treatments after learning that tumors have spread to her liver.
Elizabeth Edwards was first diagnosed in 2004 with breast cancer and after undergoing radiation therapy thought she had beaten the dreaded disease. Sadly, in March 2007, Mrs. Edwards was notified by her doctors that the cancer had returned and was spreading.

Monday, her physicians announced that further cancer treatment would be unproductive. A close family friend said that Elizabeth may only have a few days to possibly a few more weeks to live. The friend also said Mrs. Edwards was in good spirits.
Mrs. Edwards posted this statement on Facebook:
“I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful.”
Mrs. Edwards is 61 years old and has four children with politician John Edwards; Kate, Emma-Claire, Jack and Wade (deceased).
