WASHINGTON – The US Census Bureau is revising its forms to no longer include the word ‘Negro’.

The agency wishes to use more modern terms such as ‘Black’ or ‘African-American’.
The bureau kept the term Negro on its forms for more than 100 years.
But now the agency says time has come to scrap the word for good. Besides, many people in black communities in the United States find the word ‘Negro’ insulting, the Census Bureau said.
The term Negro was first used in the United States in 1900 as a means to identify people from African descent.
The Census Bureau said that it had considered removing the word Negro from its census forms in 2010 but realized that a large group of people, particularly elderly folks living in the South, still identified themselves with that word.
However, a decision has now been reached to remove the word from all US Census Bureau forms and documentation.
