Last year at least 745 Rhinos were slaughtered illegally, an increase of 43 percent compared to 2011.
This year the number stands at at least two Rhinos per day being killed by poachers.
The International Nature Organization IUCN announced today that if the slaughter continues at that rate, the rhinoceros will become extinct. The IUCN said that’s particularly true for the black rhino of which there are only 5,000 specimen left in Africa.
The Switzerland based agency claims that well organized crime organization are behind the poaching.
The illegal trade of the Rhino’s horn is very lucrative especially in Asian countries such as China and Vietnam where the Rhino horn is believed to have medicinal value.
The IUCN says that the demand for Rhino horns has exploded especially in Vietnam where the horns are grounded into powder which is then mixed in with ‘organic’ medicine.
