The horses were discovered by the German animal protection services ‘Vier Pfoten’ – four paws – in conjunction with the Romanian Veterinarian Services.

Vier Pfoten believes the horses were slaughtered and their meat was illegally mixed in with beef products – currently a major scandal in many European countries.

People living around the lake had called in journalists after finding predominantly horse heads and legs laying near the edge of the lake.

Further investigation by local police and firemen discovered more horse parts. Complete carcasses of horses that had been killed only recently were found inside the lake.

Remarkably, there is no slaughterhouse in the vicinity of the lake.

The ongoing horse meat scandal in Europe lead to investigators stumbling upon a large slaughter house in central Romania last week, that purchased large quantities of horse meat and resold it as beef.

Vier Pfoten says that everywhere in Romania people are busy gathering horses, put them in a stable and when the time is right, slaughter them and sell their meat.

A few days ago, investigators found bones and skulls from horses near a small town in a remote area in Romania. That area does not have a registered slaughter house as well, making police stipulate that the bones and skulls were dumped by an illegal slaughter house.

In most of Europe the horse meat scandal is ongoing. Ikea, the furniture manufacturing giant, just recently pulled all its meatballs from the shelves after an investigation proved the beef balls had been mixed with horse meat illegally.
