(NDJ) – Aesha Mohammadzai from Afghanistan, became world famous when she appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 2010, showing herself with her ears and nose chopped off.

Aesha was brutally mutilated by her husband after she “dared” to escape a horrible marriage.
The then 19 year old woman has since become a symbol of hope for all Afghani women who suffer abuse by their husbands but dare not leave because of brutal retaliation by their men.
Today, 3 years after her horrific ordeal, Aesha proudly shows her new face, wearing a nose prosthetic.
Doctors created the artificial nose by inserting an inflatable silicon tube under the skin of Aesha’s forehead. Overtime, the tube was filled with fluid, allowing it to expand gradually.
Surgeons constructed the bottom portion of Aesha’s new nose using skin tissue from one of her forearms.
Aesha says she proud of her new nose and ready to start living again. She wishes there would be a similar cure to heal her internal scars as well.
Aesha Mohammadzai tells her story:
“Every day I was abused mentally and physically by my husband and his family. One day I couldn’t take it anymore and ran away. But they caught up with me and I spend five months in jail after that. When I was released the judge send me back to my husband. That same night we went into the mountains. He tight my hands and my feet and began cutting me. I lost conscious. When I came through I felt as if cold I had cold water in my nose. I was unable to see because of all the blood.”
Aesha said they left her for dead in the mountains and she managed to crawl to her dad’s house on her own strength.
A humanitarian organization learned about Aesha’s ordeal. They arranged to have the young woman being brought to the US for medical treatment.
Once in the US, Aesha was welcomed into a family who treated her as one of their own.
“I am trilled with my new nose. To all the women who are being abused at this moment: do not lose hope, do not give up!”
Aesha’s life has been ‘difficult’ since she was just 12 years old when her dad ‘traded’ her to pay off a debt. She ended up with a Taliban fighter, who forced her to sleep outside with the pigs.
90 percent of all Afghan woman are abused, according to the United Nations.
