ROME – A remote stretch of beach in Sicily Italy, that has more rocks than sand, was given ‘the world’s best beach’ award based on millions of reviews and ratings by international tourists on the TripAdvisor website.

In the first annual award, Rabbit Beach, on the island of Lampedusa, off the south coast of Sicily, was described as an unspoiled nature reserve that can only be accessed by boat.
“Rabbit Beach’s is clearly a big hit with travelers and it’s easy to see why with its stunning turquoise water and white sand,” said TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw.
Despite being nominated the best beach in the world there is one drawback to Rabbit Beach. The beach is made up of mostly rock and has a very small area of white sand to lay down on and get a tan.
That can lead to overcrowding, especially during the summer season when Rabbit Beach is packed with travelers all wanting to enjoy a bit of ‘paradise’and wildlife.

Shaw said the Best Beach In The World award would be a boost for Sicily’s tourism and will no doubt made Rabbit Beach even more crowded.
Rabbit Beach is one of the few places in the Mediterranean where loggerhead sea turtles go to lay their eggs.
