daytona international speedway crash

This year, the first race of the new ‘NASCAR Nationwide Series‘ ended with a spectacular crash during the final turn that send cars flying, tires and awnings flying into the stands.

Ten cars collided during the last turn of the race. 20 year old rookie Kyle Larson’s (# 32) car flew trough the air and smashed full speed, into the safety fence.

The car stayed stuck in the fence but tires and car parts flew into the spectators – see video below. The engine of the car flew out of the car frame also smashing into the fence.

33 fans got struck by flying debris. 14 of them had to be taken to nearby hospitals.

As by miracle, none of the drivers got killed or seriously injured. Only one of them required medical attention but has been cleared to ride again.

The crash happened after a race car touched another vehicle while going into the final turn of the Daytona International Speedway race. That set off a ‘chain reaction’ of one car crashing into another at high speed.

Tony Stewart, who managed to ‘escape’ the crash drove first over the victory line. He refused to celebrate his victory saying: “What matters more is the condition of the fans and the drivers.”
