They claim the software is surprisingly accurate and quick in determining if a tumor is aggressive or not. The software makes the use of microscopes to detect subtle differences in human tissues unnecessary.
Astronomers at the University of Cambridge have been using the software for many years but up until now no one thought about possibly using it to analyze cancer tumors.
Head researcher Raza Ali, a pathologist at the Cancer Research department of the Cambridge Institute said that by using the astronomer’s software he and his colleagues were able to analyze 2,000 tumors in just one day; a process that would normally take weeks to complete.
But more research needs to be conducted on more cancer patients to ensure the accuracy of the software before hospitals can use the software.
