Wang Lanqin and Fu Minzu – mother and father of Fu, who live in Huangyan, China, brought their son home and committed to taking care of him 24/7. That included manually pumping an oxygen pump so their son could breathe.

Hour after hour, Wang and Fu pushed the pump, often one thousand times, until their hands became completely deformed from the repetitive activity. Still quitting was not an option for Fu’s parents and they continued to push the pump every hour around the clock.

Eventually Wang and Fu build a mechanical ventilator from used parts and a discarded plastic milk bottle that pushes air in their son’s lungs via a tube.

But even with this working ventilator Fu’s parents must manually pump for oxygen during the day to keep the electricity bill affordable. Only at night do they let the ventilator operate so that they can get some rest.

Fu Xuepeng, who is completely paralyzed but conscious, lies restricted in his bed in a room that offers not even basic amenities. He wears a red beany against the cold.

Recently there has been a ray of hope and change shining on Fu and his parents when media reported the horrific existence on Chinese TV.

Donations began to flood in and a company in Peking gave Fu a brand new breathing ventilator.

Fu Minzu, Fu’s dad told the China Daily paper he was touched by his people’s generosity but added “no parent would give up on their child as long as there is a chance of surviving”.

China’s medical care is improving but payouts are slow coming and people living in rural areas often can not afford expensive hospital costs and depend on families and friends to pay for medical care.
