It was really Ken Wilman’s dog Madge, who discovered the rather ‘strange smelling’ rock laying in the sand.

Turns out the ‘rock’ is a rare form of whale puke, known as ‘amber’, which is used in perfumes. A French businessman has already offered Wilman $US62,500 for the puke.

Madge began sniffing the rather large, yellow tinted, glaze textured rock. Ken first pulled his dog away but decided to pick up the special rock because he had a hunch it could be amber.

He was right. Amber is a greasy texture admitted from the intestines of sperm whales. The whales puke out the greasy content, which usually floats on the water.

Once in a while a piece of amber will wash ashore and when found by a lucky individual, such as Ken Wilman, can prove to be very valuable.

Often times, whale amber is referred to a ‘floating gold’. And while young amber has a foul odor, aged amber has a musk smell treasured by perfume industries.

What’s more, the longer you smell aged amber, the better the odor gets.

In the meantime, Wilman is awaiting confirmation that what he found is indeed natural amber. If so, he’s ready to make the transaction with the Frenchman.

Many perfume industries have resorted to creating ‘artificial’ amber because natural amber is hard to come by and as Wilman discovered, very expensive, even for an amount, smaller than the palm of a human hand.
