A judge from Guatemala stated that there is enough evidence that Ríos Montt ordered the government’s army to slaughter 1771 native Indians while he ruled the country from 1982 to 1983.

The judge stated that act was the bloodiest period of the Guatemalan civil war which lasted from 1960 to 1996 and took the lives of more than 200,000 Guatemaltecos.

Rigoberta Menchú, a human rights activist who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992, say that the Guatemala army under command of Ríos Montt conducted at least 250 massacres, killing at least 25,000 native Indians.

Ríos Montt is the first former military commander and the first former dictator of a central-American country to be charged with genocide.
