Two musicians have been arrested as well in connection with the fire that broke out in the KISS nightclub early Sunday morning.
Reportedly, the fire started when a singer from one of the performing bands lit up a pyrotechnic torch on stage. The flame of the torch reportedly put the insulation material strapped to the ceiling on fire, which spread quickly and engulfed the nightclub in thick smoke and flames.
Local news state that only one emergency exit was operational at the time the fire broke out, which is a direct violation of Brazilian safety laws.
The Brazilian government has announced the country will adhere to a 3 days mourning for the people who lost their lives in the fire.
Santa Maria’s local government said it will follow a 30 days mourning for the victims.
The inferno, described as the second worst in Brazilian history, forced the cancellation of an event to mark the run-up to the country’s hosting of next year’s biggest global sporting event, the soccer World Cup.
