A 1994 ruling forbid female soldiers, who make up about 15 percent of the US military force, from fighting in combat.
As of last year about 14,000 posts were made available to female soldiers that were off limits to them . However, women were still not allowed to serve in special units.
Because of the Pentagon’s decision to allow women to fight in combat, various Army divisions must revise their operation to include women.
The divisions have been given till 2016 to list all areas in the army that off limits to women.
When the new ruling will be instigated is not yet clear. However, Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, together with head of the US Army, Martin Dempsey, will announce the new decision on Thursday.
