A spokesperson for the U.S. Marine band that played during the Barack Obama inauguration came forth today saying that Beyonce did lip-sync the song.
“We all know Beyonce can sing,” said Master Sgt. Kristin duBois of the U.S. Marine Band. “We all know the Marin Corps Band can play. We do not know why she decided to go with the pre-recorded music at the last minute.”
Special music is pre-recorded for the inauguration in case of trouble with the band or extreme cold weather or other conditions that warrant the pre-recorded music to play.
Kelly Clarkson, who sung her rendition of “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee’” during the inauguration could be seen signaling to Beyonce afterwards and reportedly mouthed “it’s so hard.”
That led to rumors that possibly Kelly Clarkson did lip-sync her song as well. Meghan Kehoe, spokesperson for Clarkson says she sang live but didn’t know if Kelly and Beyonce had a last minute conversation about lip-syncing.
If both performers did indeed lip-sync their songs millions of people watching the inauguration in place and on TV weren’t any the wiser for it.
Extremely cold temperature made it very difficult however for performers to perform live.
Veteran James Taylor said he was glad he made it through his song “without a major train wreck” because his hands had stiffened up from the cold making it difficult for him to play the guitar.
If Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson did in fact lip-sync their songs, it’s not the first time this happened during an Obama inauguration.
In 2009 the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the violinist Itzhak Perlman weren’t playing the version of “Air and Simple Gifts”, by John Williams, that was heard across the Mall and on TV.
