Reportedly, the Algerian army has managed to free hundreds of hostages, comprising of Algerian and foreign nationals. About 30 hostages remain at the gas field. Under those remaining captive are Americans, Japanese and Brits.

British Premier David Cameron announced earlier today that one British hostage was killed during the raid.

According to Cameron there are far less than 30 hostages remaining. He also said that there are more Brits among them but had no further details about them.

US officials said that one American, identified as Frederick Buttaccio, was killed but that two others managed to escape. The whereabouts of these two individuals is unclear.

The Al-Qaida-linked militants claimed Friday that they were holding two American hostages and would exchange them for two people being held in the US, being the blind sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman convicted in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and Aafie Siddiqque, a 40-year-old Pakistani neuro-scientist, who was convicted of attacking US soldiers in Afghanistan.

US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, said the US will pursue the Islam extremists involved in the takeover of the In Amenas natural gas plant.

The Mauritian news agency ANI said that the Islam extremists blew up a portion of the In Amenas natural gas plant to fend of the Algerian army. ANI says the militants are from Niger and not Libya as was first stipulated.

The news agency reported the group was retaliating over French military action against Islamic incursions in neighboring Mali. But the French operation began just a week ago and the assault on the plant appeared to be long-planned.
