Fifa World Cup has officially started as South Africa played against Mexico as the first opening game of the cup. The stadium was filled to capacity with fans and soccer enthusiast. The atmosphere can only be described as electrifying as the sound of buzzing mouth pipes filled the air continuously.
And yet, this joyous moment for South Africa and its people is overshadowed by a great sadness of equal proportion as the country mourns over the tragic death of their dearly beloved Nelson Mandela’s thirteen year old grand daughter, Zenani Mandela, who died after a fatal car crash, early this Friday, just before the start of the first game.
Nelson Mandela, 91 years young, was scheduled to appear at the opening ceremony of this history making FIFA World Cup but won’t attend after receiving the devastating news of the passing of his grandchild.

Zenani Mandela was chauffeured home from a concert when the car slammed into a road railing, killing the 13 year old. South African police have arrested the driver and told inquires that he (the driver) had been drinking and was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
Initial reports claimed that Zenani was accompanied by Winnie Madikizela – Mandela, her great-grandmother and second wife of Mandela, at the time fo the crash. However, that story has been recanted. Winnie was however hospitalized for shock when she was informed about the passing of her great-grandchild.
It was only a few days ago, Wednesday June 9th 2010, that Zenani celebrated her 13th birthday. She was one of nine Nelson Mandela’s grandchildren.
A spokesperson for the Mandela family has requested for privacy as they mourn the passing of their daughter, grandchild and great-grandchild Zenani.
