Police say the critically injured person suffered head trauma.
At time of impact there were 343 people on board the ferry, including crew members. A large gash could be seen in the underside of the boat.
“There was a jolt when that occurred, throwing the people forward into their seats and the walls,” SeaStreak President James Barker told NBC 4 New York.
It was not known what caused the crash, which occurred at Manhattan’s Pier 11, near Wall Street. The pier was closed following the incident, officials with the New York Waterway tweeted.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it would launch a full team to investigate the accident. The U.S. Coast Guard also offered assistance.
