“People want relieve from the holiday stress. With a new year, people are looking to start new and people want someone to cling to during winter blues,” say the scientist that conducted the study.

And starting an affair is part of a new beginning, especially if an existing relationship already has its troubles, according to the research.
One in five Brits suffer from winter blues, caused by the shortening of the days, which can lead to depression. That too can drive someone to look elsewhere for a ‘pick me up’, the study points out because those individuals are discontent with their lives.
Dating sites experience a 25 percent increase in activity on January 7th, the study shows, a sign that people are actively looking for a partner.
But psychotherapist Mark Maitland warns to be careful saying: “most relationships do not survive an affair”.
“The deceit destroys the intimacy between the partners and creates a wound that doesn’t heal well,” says Maitland.
Still, January 7th is officially recognized as the ‘affair day’ and dating sites around the globe are cashing in big time from the phenomenon.
