The drama unfolded early Saturday morning around 3:00 AM when police wee called to a home in Aurora to investigate gunshots.
Police found three bodies inside the home. A gunman had taken the individuals hostage earlier. Police killed the gunman after hours of failed negotiations. One additional person in the house managed to get away.
It is unclear whether the people were related to each other or knew each other.
Neighboring homes were evacuated prior to the shootout between police and the gunman to avoid more casualties.
Aurora was the scene of a mass shooting last summer in which 12 people were killed and 58 were wounded.
Last week the city got a stir up, causing anger and resentment, when the theater announced it would reopen and invited the family of the victims to attend the special event on January 17th.
