But hours after spokesperson for the family Jim McGrath said that Mr Bush was improving and had been released from ICU, the German paper published his obituary.

The obituary, which was unfinished, appeared on Der Spiegel’s website on Sunday and was spotted by readers. The paper removed the content a few minutes later.

In the obituary, a New York correspondent for the magazine described Bush as “a colorless politician” whose image only improved when it was compared to the later presidency of his son, George W Bush.

The paper didn’t apologize for making an obituary and blamed the appearance of the content online to technical problems.

“All newsrooms prepare obituaries for selected figures,” the magazine said on its Twitter feed. “The fact that the one for Bush senior went live was a technical mistake. Sorry!”
