The Philippines has one of the fastest human population boom in Eastern Asia and prior attempts to offer free contraceptives have been futile because of local government boycotts.

This time too, the new law faced opposition as nuns, clergy and other ‘as God sees fit’ opinionated individuals took to the streets to oppose the new law.

The Philippines is a predominantly strong Catholic nation where people still believe that contraceptives should not be used because having children is ‘God’s will’ and against Catholic doctrine.

The Roman Catholic Church repeatedly tried to block the bill and the Church and its political allies could still derail it.

Condoms are widely sold in the Philippines, but at a price that many people cannot afford.

The new law took 14 years to pass and will reduce poverty and maternal mortality, according to those pro birth control.
