MADRID – Things aren’t going well with tennis great Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard hasn’t played a pro tennis match since being booted out in the early rounds of Wimbledon on July 28 2012.

Nadal’s corner has claimed his knee injury is preventing him from playing, causing the 4th ranked in the world to forfeit one tennis match after another.
The 26 year old is not going back onto a court until February 2013 in Acapulco Mexico, playing for $US1.155 million prize money. That means Nadal won’t compete in the Australian Open beginning January 14th.
Nadal was scheduled to make a comeback in Abu Dhabi this week but an intestinal infection prevents him from playing there.
“My knee is much better and rehab is going as planned but a stomach virus prevented me from training last week. I am sorry but I won’t be playing in Doha and Australia,” Raffa said in a statement.
“I always said I am only coming back if I can defend myself optimally. I haven’t played for so long, I don’t want to rush into anything.”
Coach Toni Nadal said: “Rafael can’t just come back and play 5 sets in a tournament. He’s not ready for that.”
But critics wonder if Raffa has an injury at all? Rumors are flying high that maybe he’s burned out or not mentally up to par to the level he used to be.
“It would explain the long absence, giving him time he needs to regroup, re-gather his thoughts and focus and get a new game plan going,” said one sport journalist.
Nadal’s corner has not responded to that statement. He won the Australian Open in 2009 and placed 2nd in 2011.
