BOGOTA – A bus accident in the center of Colombia took the lives of at least 27 passengers and injured 15 more.

24 people died on the scene, 2 others died later on at a hospital, according the department of public transportation in the province of Cundinamarca.

That same department announced the death of a child later on, bringing the total of people who died in the crash to 27.

All the bodies are being transported to Bogota where they will be examined by coroners.

The accident happened in the middle of the night. The bus that veered off the road was part of a four bus convoy that was returning workers back to Cali after they had attended a new year’s party in Bogata.

Witnesses claim the bus’ brakes failed but police have yet to confirm this.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos posted on Twitter: “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims”.

He asked his people to drive especially careful during the holidays.
