During the festival, the Mayans danced and offered corn to their moon god Ixchel in a cave near the city of Merida. Ixchel is the Mayan god for fertility.
After 5200 years, the Mayan calendar is coming to an end on December 21 2012. For many Westerns, this date has been linked to earth’s doomsday.
NASA and other scientists have already made it clear that the world will not end on that day.
For the Mayan, there are still about 800,000 Mayans living in Mexico, December 21 2012 also does not mean the end the world but the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new cycle.
Mayan Liborio Yeh Kinil (62) says: “We don’t know if the world will end. Remember June 6 2006, people thought then the world would end because that date was considered to be the ‘devil’s number’ 666. Nothing happened”.
“Why panic? If something is going to happen, it will happen,” said Kinil.
Movies, documentaries and books have been trying to find a link between the end of the world and the Mayan calendar date December 21 2012 pointing to a sun storm, a giant black hole or a change in earth’s magnetic poles.
But archaeologists maintain however, there is absolutely no connection between the end of the world and the end of the Mayan calendar cycle.
