(NDJ) – By all accounts, baby Mya Whittington was born healthy and happy but when she turned 7 months old she became bitterly cranky.
Neither the parents nor her doctor could find anything wrong with Mya.

She was taken to a hospital, just to be sure. Once there, to everyone’s amazement, Mya began growing a feather right from the left side of her neck.

Mya’s dad, Aaron Whittington, 26, said “We were just pretty much in disbelief”.

It all began last Saturday when Mya’s mom noticed her baby’s neck being swollen on the left side. Thinking their daughter has a swollen gland, the couple decided to wait till Monday to take her to the hospital.

On Sunday they changed their minds seeing that Mya’s neck bump had swollen to twice the size it was the day before and now it even had something that looked like a ‘pimple’ growing on it.

“There is no way this is a swollen gland,” Aaron said.

Mya was rushed to the hospital near the couple’s home in Hutchinson, Kansas. At first doctors thought Mya had a staph infection of her lymph nodes but when they tried to drain the pimple, nothing came out.

Hours later, Aaron and his wife Emma, noticed what appeared to be a “half-inch string” sticking out from Mya’s neck. They called the pediatrician, who pulled on the string and pulled out a 2-inch feather.

” ‘It’s a feather.’ And we’re like, ‘What do you mean it’s a feather?’ And she showed us,” Whittington said, still in disbelief.

The doctor believes that more than likely Mya inhaled or swallowed the feather and that it got lodged in her throat and that her body began rejecting the ‘foreign object’ until it pushed the feather through Mya’s neck.

Mya is now “almost 100 percent recovered,” says Aaron. Doctors have checked her out and determined that she will not need surgery. They say her body will heal on its own.
