Johan Huibers, a general contractor by trade, constructed the wooden vessel over a period of twenty years. He let it to water on Monday and visitors are now allowed on board, up to 3,000 per day.
The ark described in the Book of Genesis measured 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. A cubit is supposed to be the distance of a man’s arm from the elbow to the fingertips, so Huibers used his own arm and his ark came to be around 450 feet long.
Huibers envisioned building the model 20 years ago when he had a dream that the Netherlands was submerged in a flood like the Old Testament destruction.
The ark is build around a steal frame which is covered with Swedish pine instead of the “gopher wood” mentioned in the Bible. Huibers says that’s okay since, in the Bible, God told Noah to use a “resin wood.”
The ark known as ‘Johan’s Ark’ has live animals on board but is restricted to rabbits, pheasants and parakeets, the rest of the animals are giraffes, elephants lions, bears, horses and the like, molded from plastic materials.
The ship also houses two theaters and a restaurant.
The ‘real’ ark is said to be resting on mount Ararat in Turkey, which has been claimed off limits by Turkish government.
