NEW YORK – Considering a zoo is witness to many births, it may not sound all that strange that a woman gave birth there.

A pregnant woman visiting the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, New York, with her companion and children, began having labor pains and contraction while enjoying the park.
Shortly thereafter, the 21 year old gave birth to a daughter, next to the bears exhibit.
Zoo personnel assisted with the delivery of the baby while her companion took the other children to the lion park.
Zoo employee Liz Schmidt said she rushed to help the woman but realized she was already in the process of giving birth when she got there.
“I honestly didn’t think she would give birth in the zoo,” said Schmidt. “I thought we would put her in a wheelchair and get her to the nearest hospital quickly.”
Luckily for the pregnant woman and her yet unborn infant, Schmidt had taken classes in assisting with giving birth and knew exactly what to do.
While Schmidt delivered the baby, other zoo personnel assisted with bringing blankets and keeping nosy visitors at bay.
Sarah Kohler, who works as an animal caretaker at the zoo, said “When I got there, the baby was already well on its way out. She said she just made sure the baby was breathing.
Shortly after the ‘zoo birth’, an ambulance arrived which took the mother and newborn to a nearby hospital. Their identities are not being released but both mother and daughter are doing very well.
